In a world where everything is and can easily be recorded, I want my work with celluloid film to be an act of resistance through intentionality, patience, and generous attention.
Laura La France is an Alberta filmmaker specializing in Super 8mm production and editing. Working under Big Mimic Productions, with a focus on documentary and a distinctly straight-forward style, Laura shoots film for musicians, brands, weddings, companies, organizations and individuals.
Laura has been described as a “relentless documentarian of the transcendently banal everyday moments that constitute a human life.” Her work with Super 8mm captures a sense of place on the Canadian Prairies that feels timeless, relatable, nostalgic and other-worldly.
Since 2020, Laura’s music videos and award-winning micro short, Kite Fest, have screened at film festivals across the States and Europe, including an in-person showcase at the Las Cruces International Film Festival in 2023. In 2024, Laura worked as second camera and Super 8mm DOP for the CBC Gem: Absolutely Canadian documentary, SHY WOMAN (dir. Lizzie Derksen), and worked closely with singer-songwriter Mariel Buckley on a series of music videos for her 2025 album, Strange Trip Ahead. Laura is currently in post-production on her very own short documentary, ᐅᐦᑎᓯᐩ, with the help of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Edmonton Arts Council.
Laura also sits on the board of directors for Northwest Film Fest and works as a digital and 35mm projectionist for the apple of Edmonton’s eye, Metro Cinema.
